What Is Education For?

Wanted to share this information passed on from Rodney McDonald of Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER) highlighting a 1991 essay by Dr. David Orr entitled:

“What Is Education For?
Six myths about the foundations of modern education,
and six new principles to replace them”

Some of you will be aware of this paper but most of us would find it worth reading again periodically. It’s relavancy remains more than a decade later. Please access this essay on line at:

It is published in a journal entitled In Context and you can see other papers in this issue at http://www.context.org/ICLIB/IC27/TOC27.htm

David Orr is currently Professor and Chair of the Environmental Studies
Program at Oberlin College (http://www.oberlin.edu/envs/default.htm

Several of us who attended the 2004 NAAEE conference in Biloxi, MS also had an opportunity to hear Dr. Orr who was a keynote, speak on

“Environmental Education in an Age of Terror”

Transcripts of this and other papers delivered at this conference should be available this spring on the NAAEE web site at
