Re: Define 'The Outdoor Classroom'

Mary,

Can you give me more of a context of this request?    Is this going to be placed in state building code for schools? If so look at Maryland's documents - they have produced a series of "green school" booklets for all new construction and renovation.   http://www.edfacilities.org/pubs/outdoor.html
We are looking at doing the same here in Kentucky.

Jane Eller with the Kentucky Environmental Education Committee is chair of Kentucky's work on Green Schools.  http://keec.ky.gov/

Do you plan on having outdoor classroom components built as part of new construction?   Is so what components are you asking to have included?

Kind Regards,

David Wicks

Subject: Define 'The Outdoor Classroom'

Hello folks
We have recently been asked to provide a definition of 'The Outdoor Classroom' for tender documents for a new-build school. What was wanted was a definition that made the designers/contractors realise that the term didn't just mean a classroom outside. The following is what we came up with but I was wondering if anyone else had come across a good definition - thanks, Mary Jackson, LTL

‘The Outdoor Classroom can be said to be an organised and defined teaching and learning setting outside of the school building or can also refer to the whole of the school grounds as a learning environment.’

March 2005 - LTL.
