Leadership Learning Community "Evaluation Pool"

Below is some of the text retrieved October 17, 2004 from http://www.leadershiplearning.org/pools/evaluation/

Evaluation focuses on the critical evaluation questions that challenge leadership development programs including how to measure personal transformation and social impact. This page lists (in reverse date order) the resources or "wisdom" developed through LLC learning activities and projects. Also in this evaluation knowledge pool are resources contributed by participants in the LLC community and recommended resources available through other organizations. These additional resources are available through the links in the box located on the right.

Evaluation News: The LLC Evaluation Learning Circle convened a one-day gathering in New York on September 23, 2003 to develop a shared learning agenda to support cross-program learning through evaluation. Cross-program learning has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of effective program design strategies, knowledge about the impact of those strategies in accelerating change, and improved capacity to leverage collective wisdom to make a stronger case for investments in leadership. This gathering was supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and organized by Development Guild/DDI and the Leadership Learning Community. A summary of the September conversation is available here.

The Evaluation Learning Circle will continue the learning agenda project at Creating Space V with a session entitled, Evaluating Social/Systemic Change Strategies: A Focus on Personal Transformation and Network Building in Leadership Development. The session abstract is available here.

In other news, a team of evaluators, practitioners, and scholars convened by the Leadership Learning Community has completed an evaluation of three leadership programs that were part of a 10-year Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) funded by The California Wellness Foundation. This project used surveys, interviews, and stories to assess and document program impact on individuals, organizations, communities, and systems level change. The full report, including survey instruments and interview protocols, is available here.

Evaluation Guides: The Evaluation Forum has created a very helpful guide to assist leadership programs in describing their theory of change, identify outcomes and indicators and construct an evaluation plan. A copy of the guide, funded by the Packard Foundation and the Gates Foundation, is available here.

A recent publication by Jennifer Martineau and Kelly Hannum entitled, Evaluating the Impact of Leadership Development: A Professional Guide provides practical advice ranging from how to develop evaluation questions to how to disseminate evaluation findings. For more information see the Center for Creative Leadership.

Evaluation Watch: The Leadership Learning Community is undertaking an evaluation of its own efforts in order to better understand how LLC is building the capacity of the leadership development field to create, share, and use resources, in particular, knowledge and relationships. One of the outcomes is to develop evaluation tools that can be shared with others in the field. For further information, contact Scott Nielson.

The Leadership Learning Community is currently partnering with Development Guild/DDI and Pathfinder International to evaluate six population leadership programs funded by the Packard and Gates Foundations. For further information, contact Claire Reinelt.
The Sustainable Leadership Initiative of the Public Health Institute's Population Leadership Program is field-testing the EvaluLead approach to leadership development evaluation with 17 leadership programs. A description of the EvaluLead approach is available in the Cross Program Evaluation Learning section below. This project, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, includes many LLC member programs. Results from this field-test will be shared, upon completion, with the leadership community. For more information contact John Grove.

Evaluation Wisdom: If you would like to learn more about how leadership programs evaluate their outcomes and impacts, e.g., what outcomes and indicators they define, what approaches, methods, and sources of information they use, please click here to see a copy of Evaluating Outcomes and Impacts: A Scan of 55 Leadership Programs conducted by Development Guild/DDI with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

We encourage you to share approaches, methods, tools, and reports from your leadership evaluation projects. Together we will deepen and improve our knowledge.
