The UC Berkeley Service-Learning Center has developed the Evaluation System for Experiential Education (ESEE), a comprehensive system to assess the impact of service-learning on students, faculty, educational institutions, and communities, as a means to systematically assess the impact of service-learning, school-to-work, and community service programs on students' educational development.

This system was developed after five years of studying and reviewing assessments of experiential education programs. From the few good studies that exist, most, if not all have failed to fully capture the essences of the programs. For example, most of the quantitative studies have focused on assessing student development in one area (e.g., self-esteem or career development) and have ignored the other educational areas that simultaneously affect students. A number of other studies have been more qualitative in their approach. But, unfortunately, they have relied primarily on limited "end of the year" surveys or sporadic anecdotal data.

This evaluation system was designed to include most, if not all, of the components necessary for a rigorous study of experiential education programs. The system combines quantitative and qualitative assessment methods across six student development domains: academic achievement, career development, social development, personal development, civic participation, and ethical development. It is the only experiential education assessment system that includes the various important program variables (e.g., nature of student working groups, intensity of field experience, culture of the program, etc.) that affect student outcomes.
