IslandWood Evaluation Project (Kearney, 2009)

Kearney, A. R. (2009). IslandWood evaluation project: Assessment of student outcomes from IslandWood's School Overnight Program. Bainbridge Island, WA: IslandWood. Retrieved April 7, 2009 from http://islandwood.org/school_programs/educators/assessment/front-page1/?searchterm=Assessment%20Report

This evaluation project created assessment tools and worked with 14 schools, 6 districts, 2 counties, and over 800 studentsto measure student gains in personal growth, classroom community, attitudes toward learning, relationship with the environment, and environmental knowledge. Executive summary and full report are available below.

Selected outcomes reported by this study for the School Overnight Program include:
Students reported that they made discoveries about themselves, including the ability to work well as a team, learning and observation skills, and the ability to overcome fears.
Students showed significant increases in precursors to environmental stewardship (such as environmental interest and comfort with nature), as well as sense of stewardship and positive changes in conservation behavior.
While students who participate in this program are often aware of pro-environmental and stewardship behaviors, they indicate that they are more likely to engage in these behaviors after the School Overnight Program.
